Welsh Conservative AM Angela Burns today expressed concern at plans to cut Assembly Government funding for the Wales Women’s National Coalition.
The organisation, which campaigns, undertakes research, and conducts projects on issues affecting women’s lives, is to close down operations at the end of June after losing out on funding from the Labour-Plaid administration.
Social Justice Minister Carl Sargeant has written to the organisation informing them of the funding decision.
Angela Burns AM said:
“I deeply regret this decision which signals the death knell for an organisation which does valuable work representing the interests of women across Wales.
“The Wales Women’s National Coalition has successfully lobbied the Assembly Government on behalf of other groups, helping them to achieve their aims.
“While I accept difficult decisions have to be made in the wake of tighter public spending, organisations such as the WWNC are widely respected and have worked effectively for many years.
“I am concerned at the wider implications of this decision which will hit groups across Wales, many of whom work with vulnerable women.
“I intend to meet the minister next week to impress upon him the error of making this decision which has ignored the wider consequences and appears to have been taken purely for financial reasons.”
