Davies: More work to be done on cancer services

Welsh Conservatives will tomorrow highlight the challenges facing cancer care services in the NHS in Wales.

Speaking ahead of the party’s Opposition debate in the National Assembly, Shadow Health Minister Andrew RT Davies said:

“We want to celebrate the achievements demonstrated in cancer research in Wales by organisations like the Wales Cancer Bank.

“I was also delighted to hear today that Cardiff University has been named as the UK’s first Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research centre of excellence. It is testament to Wales’ commitment to tackling cancer and its causes.

“I would also like to pay tribute to the dedication and commitment staff providing cancer care services; their compassion and care undoubtedly improves what is an incredibly distressing time for patients and their families.

“We will also be using tomorrow’s debate to highlight the unfortunate void by the Assembly Government in ensuring coordination across cancer services.

“The Assembly Government’s failure to effectively manage cancer resources and services has resulted in lower cancer outcomes and a shortfall in cancer care provision.

“We will also reiterate our calls for the establishment of a Cancer Coordinator for Wales; the advent of which could dramatically improve coordination across cancer care providers.”
