Pembrokeshire County Council has appointed Swansea-based Dawnus to construction Fishguard’s new primary school, Ysgol Glannau Gwaun, work on the project is due to start later this month.
Advance works to put in the surface water drainage and to demolish the Further Education Centre have already taken place.
The new school will open in September 2011 and will amalgamate the current Infants and Junior schools which operate on different sites.
County Councillor and Cabinet Member, Councillor Sian James said: “This much-awaited new school is an exciting development for Fishguard and will provide a first class facility for educating our young people.
“It will also provide the opportunity for employment for local people over the next 12 months.”
The building will be highly sustainable and designed to the Building Research Establishment’s Assessment Method (BREEAM) and will achieve an ‘Excellent’ rating.
The on-site low zero carbon technologies will provide over half the building’s electricity and heating.
As well as housing pupils from the current infant and junior schools, the building will also be equipped with sprinklers and include an Early Years Unit and Special Educational Needs unit.
