Dr Lyndon (Lyn) Rees Evans CBE, a Swansea University Physics graduate and one of the University’s most distinguished alumni, has today (Friday, May 21) been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
The Royal Society is the UK national academy of science and its Fellowship is made up of the most eminent scientists, engineers and technologists from the UK and the Commonwealth.
Each year, the Fellows elect 44 new Fellows and eight new Foreign Members, chosen for their scientific achievements.
Dr Evans was leader of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) project at CERN until very recently and was also one of four renowned figures to receive an honorary degree from the University of Geneva at a ceremony to celebrate the university’s 450th anniversary.
Dr Evans joins Swansea Physics Emeritus Professor David Olive CBE as a Royal Society Fellow.
Other prominent Royal Society Fellows include Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Richard Dawkins, Stephen Hawking, Harry Kroto, Tim Berners Lee, Paul Nurse and John Sulston. There are currently twenty five Nobel Prize winners among the Fellows and many other holders of other equally prestigious awards. Previous Fellows include Isaac Newton, Christopher Wren, Michael Faraday, Charles Darwin, Ernest Rutherford and Dorothy Hodgkin.
