An experienced crew member of RNLI Barry Dock lifeboat station – and his dog, Pops – will be walking 28 miles in one day to raise money for the RNLI, the charity that saves lives. Paul ‘Pigsy’ Brooks will be undertaking the mammoth sponsored walk on Saturday 12 June.
He will be setting off at 5.00am from RNLI Porthcawl lifeboat station and aiming to complete the journey along the costal path by teatime on the same day. With his Jack Russell dog, Pops, by his side, Pigsy will be spurred on to complete the walk by his knowledge that the hundreds of pounds he hopes to raise will help to provide him and his crew mates with the vital equipment they need to save lives at sea.
A few friends and fellow volunteers will join Pigsy at Aberthaw to help him walk the last few miles to the RNLI Barry Dock lifeboat station, where others will be waiting to congratulate him on completing his marathon – and hand him a well earned drink!
Across the UK, RNLI lifeboats are launched an average of 25 times a day and they assist an average of 22 people a day. The running costs of the charity’s vital service are £378,000 a day so fundraising really is crucial.
