Gwent Police Authority searches for a new member

Gwent Police Authority is inviting applicants for a new Independent Member role.

Successful applicants – who must be aged 18 or over, and have lived or worked in the Gwent Police Authority area for at least 12 months – can expect to spend a minimum of 15 hours a week in the police authority role in exchange for an allowance and expenses.

Gwent Police Authority aims to reflect the diversity of the local community it serves, to this end, we particularly encourage applications from women who are currently under-represented.

The new Independent Member appointment is for a term of 2 ½ years and will start in August 2010.  They will work alongside 8 other independent members and 9 councillors who are responsible for securing an efficient and effective police service in Gwent and consulting the public about the work of the police and building a partnership between the police and the local communities.

Gwent Police Authority Chair, Mrs Cilla Davies, said:

“Police authorities have an increasingly important role to play in holding the police to account on behalf of local people, and this role will give the successful applicant the chance to do just that.

“Candidates should have an interest in local and national developments in policing, an eagerness to participate in public consultation, good communication skills and a knowledge of diversity issues.”

The closing date for applications is 11 June 2010.
