A realist would only have to look up at the sky in Cardiff to know that today was the start of a Bank Holiday weekend. Dark clouds and persistent rain marred the opening day of table-topping Glamorgan’s LV County Championship match against bottom club, the traditionally powerful Surrey.
Glamorgan, who had won their previous 4 Championship games, were seeking a 5th consecutive victory which would be a new club record. They decided against returning stalwart off-spinner Robert Croft to the side and instead opted to include young pace bowler Huw Waters. Surrey had dropped ex-South African Test bowler Andre Nel for disciplinary reasons.
Surrey won the toss and opted to field, but play did not actually begin until 4.15, and lasted for just over half an hour, sedately and relatively uneventfully. Gareth Rees and his normally more aggressive Australian opening partner Mark Cosgrove were cautious against tight Surrey bowling from Tremlett and Linley. Only 8 overs were bowled, before the players and umpires had to scurry for shelter in the pavilion again, and as heavy rain established itself decisively, no further play was possible.
