Seven rescues for Tenby crews

Tenby Lifeboats launched seven times over the bank holiday weekend.

One of the more serious incidents involved the RNLI volunteer Lifeboat crews being called to Carmarthen bar where a yacht had grounded in heavy surf and a dropping tide. Tenby lifeboats stood by as Burry Port Inshore Lifeboat evacuated the one person on board.

The next call involved the rescue of three people who had been reported to be stranded on rocks at the base of a cliff.

Both Tenby’s relief All-weather and Inshore lifeboat were called to assist a speed boat that had been swept onto rocks at Gilman point near Pendine. The party of three had launched a speedboat from a beach nearby however during their trip to pendine the outboard engine became detached from the transom and was lost overboard.

Without propulsion the young crew tried to paddle the craft with items they found onboard. But the strong tide got the best of them and the boat was swept onto inaccessible rocks at Gilman Point. Just before the speedboat sank one of the party managed to dial 999 and call the Coastguard, all three managed to swim to the rocks.

The Inshore lifeboat was on scene first and transferred the casualties from the rocks to Tenby coastguard rescue team at Morfa Buchan beach just west of Pendine.
