2010 is the UN International Year for Biodiversity so it is important that we celebrate the diversity of life within the Caerphilly county borough.
You can find out about local wildlife by visiting a special roadshow organised by CCBC’s Countryside and Landscape Service at various locations in Caerphilly during half term and Wales Biodiversity Week, (5 -13 June). Visitors will be able to get up close and personal with some of our wild neighbours; including hedgehogs, frogs and slow worms.
The ‘Meet the Neighbour’s roadshows will be taking place in Bargoed Spar Square on Thursday 3rd June with Hedgehog Helpline, Blackwood market place on Friday 4th June with the Gwent Wildlife Trust, Tredegar Park in Risca on Saturday 5th June with the Gwent Badger Group and Caerphilly Castle Court bandstand on 11th June with the Gwent Amphibian and Reptile Group. There will also be an additional road show at the Go Wild! event in Bryn Bach Park, Tredegar on Saturday 12th June.
Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth. It is essential for sustaining the natural living systems that provide us with food, fuel, health, wealth and other vital services.
Humans are part of our biodiversity with the power to protect or destroy it. Many of our activities are resulting in the loss of our local biodiversity. These losses are irreversible, impoverish us all and damage the life support system we rely on. Therefore, it is important that we safeguard the biodiversity of wildlife in our gardens and surrounding countryside.
