Changes to the way education is inspected in Wales

From September 2010, Estyn, the education and training inspectorate for Wales is changing the way it inspects.

Features of the new inspection framework include a stronger emphasis on provider self-evaluation, a shorter notice period (four weeks), the introduction of peer inspectors, phased in HMI-led inspections, shorter inspection reports and a new judgement scale based on words.

Inspections will be more strongly focused on gathering examples of good practice to share amongst providers, whilst following up with  those who are not performing as they should. Estyn is also committed to ensuring that the learner is at the heart of the inspection process.

The new inspection framework will be launched to providers at two events on 30 June and 1 July in Llandrindod Wells. Representatives from schools, local authorities and post-16 providers will be attending.
