Pigeons to planning for council staff

Ask most people about council services and they may think of bin collection, local schools, roads and planning queries, but how many know your versatile neighbourhood office can assist with the welfare of lost pigeons!

Monmouthshire County Council’s One Stop Shops, based in Monmouth, Caldicot, Abergavenny and Chepstow, provide access to local council services in and around the county but are always willing to go that little bit further taking on more challenging tasks.

Recently a worried member of the public called into the Monmouth office to explain he had found a forlorn pigeon in his garden.  Luckily, the office has established a valuable working relationship with Pat Johns of Monmouth Animal Homing and Rescue and she was able to help.  Pat collected the racing pigeon, fed and comforted it and contacted the grateful owner from Abertillery who was reunited with his bird the following day.

Pat also rescues swans and badgers and often provides useful advice.  A council employee concerned about a swan’s apparent missing limb was reassured when she pointed out that they often tuck their legs under their wings and there was consequently no need to call the vet!

Administration Officer, Lorraine Bermingham based in Monmouth said; “We always strive to help regardless the nature of the enquiry.”
