Walk to school scheme roars off

Pupils at Johnston CP School have kicked off this year’s popular ‘Walk to School’ initiative in Pembrokeshire.

More than 100 pupils walked from KO Carpets to the school, led by a pupil dressed in a Welsh dragon costume.

Over the next half-term, many schools across the County are planning a Walk to School day.

Primary schools in Fishguard, Letterston, Narberth, Haverfordwest, Pembroke, Neyland and more will be taking part.

Walking or cycling to school can:

  • Develop young people’s road awareness skills
  • Reduce car dependency by school pupils
  • Reduce the number of pedestrian casualty road accidents
  • Reduce the motor traffic congestion outside schools
  • Improve the health of children and parents who tend to live a sedentary lifestyle
  • Improve the environment of the school and surrounding area

It is hoped that through the success of cycle and walking initiatives, more children will participate on a daily basis and not rely on a car!
