‘Fete of the Earth’ Returns to Cardiff

On Saturday June 12, Fête of the Earth returns to Cardiff.

Now in its 9th year the event aims to show people how they can lead more sustainable lives.

A jammed pack programme is planned, with this year’s event being held at Cardiff Central Library, one of Wales’ most sustainable buildings.

From 10am until 3pm there will be stalls in the library, offering information and activities to help people learn about sustainability

The council’s Recycling team, Environmental Advice team, Flatholm Project, and Sustainable Development Unit will be on hand to offer advice and information.

South East Wales Energy Agency will also be giving out energy saving advice and distributing low energy light bulbs, and the Energy Savings Trust will have advice on insulating your home.

Other companies in attendance include Traveline Cymru who will provide information about public transport, Cardiff EcoHome Centre who will have lots of ideas for environmentally friendly DIY and building products. Community groups, Cardiff Cycling Campaign, Orchards Cardiff, Canton Community Gardens, and Cardiff Friends of the Earth will all be available to talk to on the day.

There will be plenty of activities to keep children entertained during the event, with seed planting, games and Cardiff’s own professional story teller, Cath Little, on hand to entertain with stories..

At 11am there will be a parade along Queen Street by Cardiff schools including, Rhiwbeina Primary School, Ton yr Owen, Lakeside Primary, Ysgol Y Wern, Glyncoed Juniors,  Eglwys Wen and Coed Glas, who have made banners on a theme of “Promoting Biodiversity” to reflect 2010 International Year of Biodiversity.

An evening programme is also planned for this years ‘Fete of the Earth’ at 7pm there will be a talk on Edible Landscapes, followed by the screening of the film “Food Inc”.

Executive Member for Environment, Cllr Margaret Jones, said: “Fête of the Earth is always a popular event in the city, and it’s great to hear that this year’s event is even bigger and better.

“There is an increasing pressure on us all to be more sustainable, Fête of the Earth gives people the opportunity to find out more about how they can do their part to help the planet.”
