Nappy days

A doting Gran has won a hamper full of baby goodies.

Gwen Evans of Pembroke Dock was presented with her prize by Councillor Ken Rowlands, Cabinet member for Environmental and Regulatory services.

Mrs Evans won her hamper – donated by Boots the Chemist in Haverfordwest – by entering a recent prize draw for those benefitting from the Real Nappy cashback scheme.

The draw was one of several initiatives marking this year’s Real Nappy Week (April 26th-May 2nd).

Supported by Pembrokeshire County Council, the annual campaign urges parents to switch to real nappies in order to reduce waste and save money.

“Parents can do their bit for the environment by reducing the number of disposable nappies they use,” said Councillor Ken Rowlands.

“Every year around seven million disposable nappies are sent to landfill sites in Pembrokeshire alone – that’s 1,600 tonnes of waste – costing the County Council over £100,000 in disposal and landfill tax annually.”

Vicky White, Real Nappy Coordinator for Pembrokeshire, said Real Nappies had come a long way from terry towelling and safety pins and were now convenient and easy to use.

“There’s no need to boil wash or tumble dry them – they can be put in the washing machine and hung on the line, making them very easy to use,” she said.

“And they can save families money too. It’s estimated that switching from disposable to real nappies can help parents save up to £500 a year.”

The Real Nappy Campaign in Wales is led and promoted by Waste Awareness Wales.

To encourage parents in Pembrokeshire to use Real Nappies the Council gives £30 cash back when they spend £50 or more on Real Nappies or £60 when they spend £150.
