A piece of overgrown land in Crumlin has been rejuvenated into an outdoor space for local school children to grow their own vegetables.
The area of land near Mining School Hill in Crumlin was previously overgrown and derelict, but thanks to officers from Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Tidy Towns – Tidy Places team, the site has now been transformed into a safe outdoor space for the local Primary School to grow their own vegetables and herbs.
Cllr Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for the environment said, “This excellent initiative has stimulated great interest in the site, which will now allow the local school to grow their own vegetables in a safe, pleasant environment. Enthusiastic residents have also come on board with the project, which is excellent as it shows how much pride this local community have in their environment”.
In addition to producing fresh vegetables and herbs, the site will also provide local school children with an interesting space in which to learn about healthy eating and nutrition.
Deputy Mayor and local member, Cllr Vera Jenkins said, “I am so pleased that this site is now being used for such a good cause. This is an example for others to follow and shows what can be done when we all work together.”
Head teacher of Crumlin Primary School Catherine Mansell said, “This project is something that the school is very proud of and this outdoor classroom will enable our pupils to enjoy this space, and moreover learn more about healthy eating and healthy living”.
