Motorists in Pontypridd are being warned by South Wales Police to slow down after 180 drivers were recorded exceeding the speed limit in less than two hours.
Police carried out speed checks in two locations in the town following concerns raised at Pact meetings by residents in Pwllgwaun and Trawlln about the speed at which some vehicles were travelling, particularly near schools.
PCSO Andrew Thomas and PCSO Lynne Meacham used a hand-held camera to record speed limits and then made a note of the registration numbers.
In just 35 minutes, 120 cars were recorded doing more than 30 mph outside Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Evan James, on Rhondda Road, Pwllgwaun, between 10.10am and 10.45am on Thursday, May 27.
On the same day in Bonvilston Road, Trallwn, a further 60 cars were found to be doing more than 30 mph between midday and 12.45pm.
Excuses made by some drivers who stopped at these locations included ‘I’m late picking my kids up’ and ‘I didn’t see the speed camera’.
All registered owners of the vehicles will now receive a letter from South Wales Police advising them of their speed and reminding them of the speed limit
Inspector Lee Porter, from the Taff Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The purpose of this operation was to educate motorists on the community’s concerns and the dangers to children from their excessive speed.
“The advisory letters will hopefully educate people and make them consider the impact on their own community, rather than just sending them a speeding fine.
“However further operations are planned in these areas and if their registration number is encountered again then we will prosecute the offenders.
