Residents across Gwent are being encouraged to work together to become actively involved in the welfare and safety of their communities during National Neighbourhood and Home Watch Week which takes place between June 14th and 20th.
There are over 500 Neighbourhood and Home Watch Schemes currently in place in Gwent. Neighbourhood Watch is one of the biggest and most successful voluntary crime prevention initiatives and is based around the idea of an active community working in partnership with the police. The four main objectives of the scheme being: to prevent crime by improving security, increasing vigilance and creating and maintaining a caring community; to assist the police in detecting crime by promoting effective communication and prompt reporting of suspicious and criminal activity; to reduce the fear of crime by ensuring accurate communications about risks and promoting a sense of security and community spirit and lastly, to improve police and community liaison.
Sergeant Colin Thomas of Gwent Police said:
“Neighbourhood Watch has been in existence for 28 years in the UK and this week serves as a reminder for neighbourhoods to make the most of their networks for the good of the entire community. If any neighbourhood wants to set up a Watch Scheme they should contact
