Classic stories written by Shakespeare and Dickens are being brought back to life in Swansea as outdoor theatre returns to the city.
Great Expectations is being held in the grounds of Oystermouth Castle on June 16 and June 17 and The Tempest will be performed at the National Waterfront Museum’s courtyard on August 18 and August 19.
Great Expectations was first published by Charles Dickens in 1860 and follows the story of an orphan trying to become a gentleman as he reaches adulthood. It’s being performed by the Quantum Theatre Company and people can expect high comedy and dark drama as they follow main character Pip and discover the true nature of his great expectations.
The first recorded production of The Tempest by William Shakespeare was undertaken in 1611. Freedom, friendship, repentance and forgiveness are some of the themes explored in the text.
Swansea Council has helped to arrange the performances.
Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: “We’re delighted to welcome yet another touring theatre group to Swansea.
“The outdoor theatre performances have become a very popular feature of the summer in Swansea Bay and two more classic stories will soon be told on stage against a backdrop of some of the city’s most stunning locations.
“Discounted tickets are available and people also have the chance to pre-order picnics to enjoy during the performances. We’re determined to maintain the standard of these events to ensure visitors get the most from their outdoor Swansea experience.”
Picnics can be pre-ordered and picked up on arrival at the outdoor theatre venues. Any orders for the Great Expectations should be made by Friday June 11 on 01792 635428 with prices starting from £25 for two people.
And people who buy tickets for both The Tempest and Great Expectations at the same time have the chance to save £2 by doing so.
Outdoor Theatre is kindly supported by Real Radio and the Sinclair Group.
