Llandudno RNLI volunteers respond to cries for help

Llandudno RNLI inshore lifeboat (ILB) crew were called out at 1.50am today (Monday), to search for a person thought to be in trouble at the resort’s north shore.  A guest at the Chatsworth Hotel had heard what seemed to be shouts for help coming from the direction of the bay.

As a result, Holyhead Coastguard requested Llandudno’s ILB to launch and search the area. Despite the resulting extensive search nothing amiss was found by the crew.

However, a 20-foot yacht, the Mari Dadi had anchored for the night close inshore during a passage from Preston to Beaumaris. This was also checked out by the ILB crew.Whilst its sole occupant, an elderly male sailor was safe and well, the yacht was in a potentially hazardous situation, with a falling tide and a forecast increase in the wind and deteriorating sea conditions.

At the lifeboat crew’s suggestion the yachtsman agreed to move his craft to a safer buoy mooring further from shore. An RNLI crewman was transferred to the yacht to assist in raising its anchor, and with his help the craft was moved to the new mooring, with the ILB standing by throughout.

With the yacht now safe for the night the lifeboat returned to the beach for recovery and refuelling; the operations were completed at 3.30 a.m.
