Six local school children have received a special thank you from the Mayor Colin Teesdale after winning a competition to name Bridgend County Borough Council’s recycling icons, the Recyclables.
Over the past two months, local children have been conjuring up a whole host of fun and imaginative names for the characters, which included a carrot, a banana, an onion, a plastic bottle, a glass bottle and a tin can.
The high response demonstrated the enthusiasm of local children and their willingness to get involved with recycling, and the winning entries fought off competition from hundreds of other pupils from across the county borough.
And now the winning names can finally be revealed. They are:
- Crunchy Carrot
- Billy Banana
- Ollie Onion
- Poppy Plastic Bottle
- Bobby Glass Bottle
- Dan Can
The lucky winners were invited to the Maytor’s Parlour where they were thanked for their efforts and awarded vouchers for the Odeon Bridgend cinema.
Mayor Colin Teesdale said: “The amount of entries we received for the competition was fantastic, and proof that children in Bridgend County Borough are taking notice of this serious subject.
“The competition was designed to communicate the recycling message to school children in a fun and informal way. If we can get the younger generation interested in recycling, hopefully they will pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm to their families.
“The council is working hard to raise awareness of the need to reduce, reuse and recycle our waste. This, combined with the new recycling and waste scheme, demonstrates our commitment to a cleaner, greener county borough.”
The Recyclables will feature on recycling promotional materials, including trucks that collect household recycling and waste.
