Aberdare Tennis Club nets new equipment

Brand new facilities have been served up at a Cynon Valley tennis club – thanks to funding of £35,000 from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Heads of the Valleys programme.

Aberdare Tennis Club joined forces with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Parks divison to secure the funding to refurbish tennis courts at Aberdare Park, which the club regularly uses, and to buy new equipment such as a serving machine, nets, balls and racquets.

The club now runs a Wednesday evening session at the tennis courts and it is a smash hit with local youngsters.

Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Cllr Robert Bevan, who went along to meet junior players, pictured above, said: “Young tennis players in Aberdare now have much-improved facilities and the sport is flourishing. We are delighted to have been able to work with the club to secure this funding from the Heads of the Valleys programme.”

As well as junior sessions on Wednesdays, adults play on Thursdays and there are mixed sessions every Saturday. For more information, please call club secretary Alan Bowditch on 01685 871599.

The Heads of the Valleys Programme was launched by the Welsh Assembly Government in September 2004. The 15-year regeneration strategy has been developed in full partnership with five local authorities: Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr Tydfil, Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen, and other local stakeholders.
