Multi-cultural days a big success

Six special events held to help build stronger community relations on Anglesey have been voted a great success by the Police Community Safety Team.

The last multi-cultural day was held last Saturday, June 26 at the Thomas Telford Centre in Menai Bridge and Police Community Support Officer, Norman Hughes, who works with the Police Community Safety Team in Caernarfon, said that they all had been very well attended.

He said: “The events, which started in January, have been truly international and members from many different local communities attended the six events which allowed them an insight into different cultures.

“The reason for arranging the multi -cultural events was to improve community cohesion and understanding as understanding and respecting each other was the key theme from start to finish,” he said

He added that during the last event many wore traditional dress and the Bangor Chinese Community performed dance routines including the Dragon Dance.

“I heard comments from some people saying that they had never spoken to the police before because they were afraid but now they had met us all they knew it was okay to do so.

“It was extremely encouraging and proves the point that working with the different communities can work and helps improve trust and confidence. We are hoping that additional funding will be available to host more events.” he said.

During all the days staff from North Wales Police and other voluntary organisations such as Medrwn Môn, worked in partnership with several different statutory agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Service and Coleg Menai’s ESOL students, were on hand to give general advice and information on culture, community safety, health social care and well-being and domestic abuse.
