National success for Ysgol Cefn Coch

Penrhyndeudraeth’s Ysgol Cefn Coch has recently secured the top prize in a national reading competition – and they achieved this success on their first ever attempt.

After beating the other teams from Gwynedd primary schools in the discussing books round in the Welsh Books Competition and going through to the final round in Aberystwyth, Ysgol Cefn Coch’s year 3 and 4 team came out on top in the all-Wales competition and won the Dr Dewi Davies shield.

For the final round, the team had to discuss a Welsh book as well as preparing a dramatic presentation on another book. The competition is arranged locally by Gwynedd Council’s Library Service and nationally by the Welsh Books Council.

Nia Gruffydd from Gwynedd Council’s Library Service said:

“Many congratulations to Ysgol Cefn Coch on their achievement. This is a truly outstanding achievement for the school, especially since this was the first time that they had competed in the event. The team were competing against other teams of the same age group across every county in Wales, so their achievement really is fantastic.”

Iwan Morgan, Ysgol Cefn Coch Headmaster added that he was extremely proud of the achievement of the pupils.

He said: “When the school received seven grade ones from Estyn examiners in 2006 – the first school in Gwynedd to do so – my cup was full. That was credit to our team of industrious and conscientious teachers and our hardworking pupils. Over the last twenty years or so in the school, we have achieved a number of different successes. As I prepare to retire at the end of this summer, my cup is full once again.”
