Following in bronze age footsteps

Sport Pembrokeshire – Pembrokeshire County Council’s sports development arm – is supporting a unique and historic fun run this summer.

The seven-mile Preseli Bluestone Challenge follows a Bronze Age path across the heart of the Preseli hills.

The route provides runners and walkers with panoramic views of north Pembrokeshire’s mountains and coastline with participants passing several prehistoric remains and Neolithic settlements along the way.

It also visits the rocky outcrop at Carn Menyn – thought to be the source of the bluestones that form the inner circle at Stonehenge.

“This must be one of the most unique runs in the country,” said Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member for Sport and Leisure.

‘As well as its historic nature, it’s also an event for the whole family and for all ability levels – from walkers to serious runners.

“Sport Pembrokeshire aims to help the organisers build the event, year on year – to become a premier event for Pembrokeshire for residents and visitors alike.”

Now in its second year, the challenge has been organised by the Rotary Clubs of Fishguard & Goodwick, Haverfordwest and Cardigan and helps raise funds for local charities including young carers and the Phoenix Community Centre project in Goodwick.

It takes place on Sunday 18th July and starts about a mile from the Crymych leisure centre registration point before ending at Bwlch Gwynt. Transport will be provided to take participants both to the start point and back to Crymych at the finish.

Runners start at 11am while the walkers head off at 11.15am.
