Fun-packed weekend at Garwnant as centre celebrates its new look

Garwnant Visitor Centre will officially re-open its doors with a fanfare of fun for all the family next weekend (10 and 11 July).

The Forestry Commission Wales centre, which has been closed for extensive refurbishment for the past three years, is ready to show off its new look – and everyone is invited!

FC Wales is planning to celebrate the long-awaited opening with a family fun weekend to announce the centre’s arrival back at the heart of community life.

Free activities include Nordic walking and guided walks into the woods surrounding the centre, and there will be a climbing wall and a skate park for those who don’t want to venture too far from the new state-of-the-art building.

There will also be face-painting, a chance to create your own willow animal, and much more. All you will have to pay is £2 to park your car each day.

A range of hot and cold locally-sourced food will be available in the new restaurant and coffee shop which is run by local caterers, Just Perfect Catering, and there will also be a barbecue and hog roast outdoors.

Sam Detheridge, Manager of the Visitor Centre which is five miles from Merthyr Tydfil and 14 miles from Brecon, said, “We aim to create a real carnival atmosphere with plenty of fun for all ages.

“The new Garwnant offers great scope for community involvement and the woodlands offer some exciting opportunities for recreation and enjoyment for all.”

The new centre includes a new information centre, an education hall and conference facility. Outside, there are upgraded walking trails in the Welsh Assembly Government woodlands -including an all-ability walking trail – mountain bike trails, a bike park, adventure play area, animal puzzle trail and adventure play area.

The re-development of the centre was a partnership effort with both private and public investment, including support from the Heads of the Valleys Strategic Regeneration Programme.

Tredegar-based Mountway Limited donated over £16,000 worth of special equipment for the new centre, making it one of the most disabled-friendly buildings in the United Kingdom.

The family fun weekend starts at 11am each day and goes on until 5pm. Click Here for more details.
