Gwynedd’s sporting boost

Sporting clubs and organisations from across Gwynedd have shared a funding boost of more than £9,700 thanks to the Gwynedd Community Chest fund.

From new golfing taster sessions and developing sailing opportunities for young people – the latest round of sport funding will provide a huge boost for sporting opportunities across the county.

Councillor Roy Owen, who leads on sport and leisure on Gwynedd Council, said:

“Our sports clubs and organisations play a vital role in communities right across Gwynedd by offering people of varying sporting abilities a chance to keep fit, developing their skills as well as meeting new friends.

“It’s great to see so many Gwynedd sports clubs benefiting from the recent round of community chest funding.”

The clubs and associations which have been successful in this round of funding are:

  • Dolgellau Golf Club – following good work with the local school, Dragon Sport and the local 5×60 officer, funding has been secured to purchase clubs to continue with their taster sessions and sessions for juniors and ladies.
  • Padlo Blaenau – as the Blaenau Ffestiniog kayaking club plan to progress to more difficult water conditions, funding has been awarded to purchase additional equipment
  • Clwb Antur Glaslyn – funding has been secured by the Porthmadog-based outdoor adventure club to provide training for new volunteers
  • Bala Bowling Club – Community Chest funding has been secured to purchase new equipment which will enable juniors to participate.
  • City of Bangor Swimming Club – funding will allow the club’s coaches to undertake the necessary coach education.
  • Prysor Angling Association – funding has been secured by the Trawsfynydd-based club so that younger members can gain national powerboat qualififcations. It is hoped that this development will ensure the club’s long term development and continuation.
  • Dragon Tree Martial Arts – the club in the Aberdyfi and Tywyn area has secured funding to help it to expand by offering new and different activities to it’s current members as well as attracting more participants. The new equipment purchased will enable more people to take part in the club’s established martial arts sessions as well as enable them to run new activities such as boxercise, Tai Chi, Yoga and self defence etc.
  • Annedd Ni – the Parc Menai based organisation near Bangor has secured funding to send  their staff on training courses to raise awareness of disability issues and enable them to lead on and coach sporting activity sessions for their disabled members.
  • Glaslyn Lifesaving Club – the Porthmadog-based club has secured funding so it can introduce open water activities which will take place on local beaches.
  • Pwllheli Sailing Club – funding has been secured so that the club can offer new and additional sailing opportunities and qualification to young children in the area.

Sports clubs and organisations can benefit from grants of up to £1,000 through the Community Chest fund which is funded by Sport Wales and administered by Gwynedd Council.
