Denbighshire’s Townscape Heritage Initiative team has made a surprising find.
Work recently started to renovate a grade II listed 16th century building in Denbigh, identified as a critical project, has unearthed the building’s original timberframe.
2 Crown Square had gone into gradual decline and work had started to repair the early 19th century brickwork and sash windows and replace the early 20th century shop windows and cement render.
Parts of the original timber frame, roof structure and lime-hair plaster infill remained, but it was uncertain how much of the original timber frame had survived.
Photographs taken in the 1950s show a timber frame with an attractive lozenge design and, having removed the cement render, the team discovered that the frame is largely intact.
Plans will now be revisited to look at the potential of reinstating the original façade. Should the decision be taken to reinstate it, the town square could be enhanced by an attractive, original timber framed building and, as the only surviving building of its kind in Denbigh, it is an important building that is worthy of restoration.
