Pupils get a buzz from Silver Award

Pupils at Ysgol Ger y Llan in Letterston have won a Silver Sustainable Schools Award.

The youngsters were presented with their award by Councillor Huw George, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, at a special assembly last Friday.

As well as encouraging people to save water and energy, pupils have been learning about the importance of bees.

Many bees are dying of disease at present, so the school’s garden club has been planting flowers to attract them to the school grounds. A member of the Beekeeper’s Association has also visited the school with a demonstration hive.

At last Friday’s assembly pupils were particularly interested to find that their award – a wooden tree – was made at the Cilrhedyn Woodland Centre, which they have visited as part of their study of wood management.

The Sustainable Schools Award scheme recognises efforts to improve quality of life and the environment without damaging the planet for future generations.
