Langland tennis could serve up a star

Tennis fans inspired by the exploits of Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams at Wimbledon now have the chance to enter a competition right on their doorstep.

The Swansea Tennis Championships come to Langland next month and people both here and across the UK only have until Friday July 16 to get their entries in.

The tournament takes place from August 9 to August 14 with age categories ranging from seven to 70. Past champions include Andy Murray in the under 12 boys singles category in 1997.

Swansea Council is behind the event.

Dave Osborne, chairman of this year’s championships and indoor operations manager at the Council, said: “The event remains as popular as ever and its continued success is testament not only to the skill and spirit of competitors but also to the hard work and dedication of the Tournament Committee.

“I look forward to seeing some exciting tennis being played and hope to see some future tennis stars in the making.”

Mary Hunter, referee at this year’s tournament, has been involved for over 50 years as both a player and an administrator.

She said: “The event attracts competitors from all over the UK and is part of the Summer Grade Three Junior Grand Prix Series.

“It’s great to see competitors return year after year as they progress through the age groups.”

Entries can be made online at www.lta.org.uk/competition (Tournament Code S.W111) or by printing a form at www.swansea.gov.uk/tennistournament and sending it to Bishopston Sports Centre.

This year’s event is supported by Morgan’s Country Store of Crofty.
