Officers in training for charity run

A team from North Wales Police lead by Chief Constable, Mark Polin, will be taking part in a 10 mile run in memory of a police officer who lost his life in the floods at Cockermouth in November 2009.

The Chief, along with nine officers and one member of staff are appealing for sponsorship for the West Cumbrian 10 mile race being held on July 18.

The race is dedicated to the officer, Bill Barker, who tragically died during the floods last year. The run will also be raising money for the Great North Air Ambulance, a charity close to the heart of Bill’s family.

The Chief said:”Since the flood the local communities and police in Cumbria have also had to deal with the violent events which took place in June where again the Air Ambulance was needed.

“We would like to show solidarity and support for our Cumbrian colleagues and communities who have been through so much and raise much needed cash for the charity,” he said.

Although the Chief has not taken part in a run of this sort before he has previously completed a 50 mile cycle ride in memory of another officer who died in Essex.

He admitted that in terms of training work was getting in the way but he was trying to do three or four runs of between four and eight miles each week.

“Should be okay providing the Highways Agency flatten the hills along the run and it is not too hot!” He said.

Other members of the team are: Special Constable Chris Hughes, Mold; Sgt John Aspinall, Rhyl; PC Petra Ashton, Schools Liaison, Mold; PC Nick Brown, CBM Gwersyllt; Ian Poole, Facilities Management, HQ; PC Yvie Johnson, Rhos, Wrexham; Gaye Waring, Coroners Officer, Central; D/Insp Sian Beck, Level 2 Operations, OSG; PC Carol Coole, Wrexham and Sgt Craig Jones, Ops Planning, HQ.
