Lord Mayor of Cardiff Celebrates 100 Years of Girlguiding

To celebrate a centenary of Girlguiding the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Keith Hyde will attend Cardiff Castle to receive a special commemorative badge from the Girl Guides Association, Wales.

The presentation will take place on Wednesday, July 14 at 4.30pm, and will also mark the special commemorative Girlguiding garden that has been planted at Cardiff Castle to celebrate 100 years of the Guides.

The garden has been planted by the Cardiff Council park team, who have put it together to celebrate the centenary.

The Girl Guides was formed in 1910, it was established so girls could have fun, whilst facing challenges and learning new skills, enabling them to become reliable and caring citizens in the community.

The Lord Mayor of Cardiff traditionally has close links with the Guides and in 2005 the Mayor’s Own Girlguides Unit was formed. There are around 100 Girlguides who qualify to be in the Lord Mayor’s Own Unit, all of whom have attained the highest Girlguiding awards.

The unit accompanies The Lord Mayor at special civic occasions, including Installation, St. David’s Day and Remembrance Sunday.

Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Keith Hyde, said: “Congratulations to the Girl Guides in celebrating a fantastic anniversary, 100 years old and still going strong.

“I am honoured to be receiving the special commemorative badge and I would like to thank the council’s parks team for planning such a glorious commemorative garden.”
