Bourne: Minister must bring bTB statement to Assembly chamber

Welsh Conservatives have today confronted the Assembly Government on its position over the bTB eradication programme.

Speaking in the Assembly Chamber, Leader of the Opposition Nick Bourne AM urged the Government bring a statement to the Chamber in light of the ruling on the Badger Trust’s appeal before the end of the summer Assembly session.

Commenting on the exchange, Mr Bourne said:

“The First Minister maintained that he, the Rural Affair’s Minister and their officials need time to absorb the judgement and consider its next steps and could not bring an oral statement to the Chamber.

“There is a clear need for members to be able to ask questions on behalf of their constituents and the communities they represent.

“A written statement will not allow them to raise such concerns.

“The First Minister must acknowledge that there were two likely outcomes to the case and the Assembly Government should have made advanced consideration of both outcomes.

“Assembly members have understandable concerns over the ongoing measures to eradicate bTB and must have the opportunity to question the Minister in the Assembly Chamber.”
