National Assembly Member Mohammad Asghar has urged the Welsh Assembly Government to do all it can to ensure countries competing in the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games look to Wales to base their training camps.
Mr Asghar, who represents South Wales East, said that the “latest published information shows that the Paralympic teams of Australia, South Africa and New Zealand will be based in Wales”.
He added: “There are 31 training sites in Wales, four of which are in my patch in South Wales East”.
Mr Asghar asked the Minister for Heritage whether he was “negotiating with any other countries to encourage them to set up” training bases in Wales.
Minister Alun Ffred Jones said that he was “confident that a sizeable number of athletes will be based” in Wales.
