Monmouthshire County Council’s Leader has said that his council’s share of £14m Welsh Assembly funding will transform technology in secondary schools in the county.
£144.8million in new capital projects for schools across Wales was announced by Education Minister Leighton Andrews this week (14th July).
The £14 million joint project – involving Monmouthshire, Torfaen Borough and Newport councils – was approved, meaning secondary schools in the area will have access to world class technology.
Leader, Councillor Peter Fox, said:
“This innovative and forward thinking initiative will enable cutting edge teaching and learning opportunities to be available to the young people of Monmouthshire.
“The announcement on further investment for school buildings throughout Wales has to be welcomed.
“Clearly we are disappointed that our own bids for new Learning facilities in Caldicot, Monmouth and Raglan were not successful at this time, but we are extremely hopeful that our plans will be successful in future announcements.
“We have been working extremely hard over the last year developing a vision for education in the County that will place Monmouthshire at the forefront of educational provision within the UK.”
“I am extremely pleased that the joint bid with our neighbouring authorities, for innovative, transformational ICT provision has been approved in principle. This initiative will enable us to put the very latest technology into all of our secondary schools.”
Monmouthshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Liz Hacket Pain, said:
“The news that we are likely to receive a massive investment to deliver cutting edge technology into our secondary schools is extremely welcome.
“This will allow us to create new and exciting learning opportunities for all of our students.
“We already deliver the best learning opportunities for young people anywhere in Wales and this will help us to keep moving forward.”
