Improvements to a number of properties in Denbigh have been completed as part of the second phase of the Townscape Heritage Initiative, which aims to protect historic properties in the town.
The works completed are:
- 45 Vale Street, which included the removal of the metal shop front replaced with a more sympathetic timber framed front, re-rendering with traditional lime render and installation of sash windows. The alterations were based on photographs of the original shop front and façade.
- Colomendy House, which houses Artisan Windows, is a substantial three storey Victorian building and is located in a prominent position within the town, and forms a focal point when viewed from Vale Street. Work comprised the replacement of display windows with new traditional shopfronts, and incorporated a new shop and staff entrance doors.
- Patchwork Cat, 53 High Street, is a Grade II listed building. Repair works included reroofing with natural Welsh slate, replacement of all rainwater goods in cast iron, substantial rebuilding of the chimney, repair of original windows and replacement of modern ones with traditional sash windows, replacing the shopfront in a traditional style, and external redecoration. The design of the new shopfront was based on information obtained from photographic evidence taken in the 1930s.
- Canolfryn, 66 Vale Street, is a Grade II listed building and has received restoration works to the roof, including repairs to slates, chimneys and rainwater goods. The façade received repairs to window frames and replacement of glazing with traditional glass where required, along with re-pointing and rendering in lime mortar and general decoration.
- The Carriageworks, Love Lane required re-roofing in slate and due to spread from the untied roof structure, stabilisation of the front wall was required. The original windows and doors were repaired and redecorated, and the brickwork was re-pointed. Internal improvements were also carried out with a view to letting the building for commercial use.
- 1 Stable Cottage, Bull Lane received works to prevent damp penetration from the town wall. Other work included repairs to the roof along with the replacement of windows. Rainwater goods were replaced with cast iron pipes and gutters.
Projects that have recently started include The Old Police Station, Mostyn House, 2 Crown Square and Tŷ Thomas Gee. Work is ongoing at Bryn y Parc and sections of the house are now open to the public.
Denbigh THI Phase 2 is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Welsh Assembly Government Physical Regeneration Fund (PRF) and Town Improvement Grants (TIG), CADW: Historic Buildings and Monuments, Denbighshire County Council, Neighbourhood Renewals Areas and Denbigh Town Council. The fund is around £5.5m for this phase.
