The life and times of a Roman soldier will be the focal point of a Roman camp being set up in the Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty later this month, as part of the Festival of British Archaeology.
The Ermine Street Guard, perhaps the best known Roman legionary re-enactment group in the UK, make a return visit to Loggerheads Country Park, to demonstrate both camp life and battle formations.
This free event at Loggerheads Country Park will take place on Saturday, 31 July and Sunday, 1 August from 10am-4pm.
Fiona Gale, County Archaeologist and event organiser said: “The Clwydian Range is well known for its chain of spectacular hillforts, which were occupied in the period before and during the Roman invasion of Britain.
“This camp may show us what our Iron Age ancestors in the hillforts were faced with when the Romans descended. How did they react, what did they do?
“The only information we have is through the Roman written record, where Tacitus describes how valiantly and fiercely the Britions defended their forts. But in the end they could not compete with the military discipline of the Romans.”
