Re-appeal for information after Assault, Newport

Police are re- appealing for information after a man in his fifties was assaulted in the Wyndham Street area of Newport early Sunday morning (July 18)

At approximately 5am the victim was making his way along Wyndham Street when he was approached by a man who asked for money. The offender punched and kicked the victim causing extensive facial injuries. The victim was also sexually assaulted.

Following information gained from extensive house to house enquiries, Police are very keen to to speak to a man who was seen in the Tewkesbury Walk area between 5am and 6am that morning. The witness described him as a white male, approximately six feet tall, with dark very short or shaved hair. He was wearing a white top and walked in the direction of the Rising Sun Public House.

Detective Chief Inspector Ruth Price is leading the investigation:

“Enquiries, including forensic analysis, is ongoing in this investigation. The community have been very, very helpful and we are thankful for that. They are obviously concerned about this type of crime happening in their neighbourhood and we must reiterate that this kind of unprovoked violence is very rare in the Gwent Force area. The Neighbourhood Policing Team are remaining in the area today carrying out house to house enquiries and will be happy to speak to anyone who has any concerns or any information they may not have already given us.

“We are keen to speak to the man who was seen in the area on the morning of the incident. Importantly he was seen walking toward the Rising Sun Public House so we are appealing for people who may well have driven on the main road, passed Sainsbury’s up to the roundabout to come forward as they may well have seen him. The description given does bear a resemblance to the offender in this assault, however we are keeping an open mind at the moment and would urge him to come forward to help with the investigation,”

Police would appeal to anyone with information to get in touch on 01633 838111 or crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
