The price of school meals in Pembrokeshire will rise next September.
Pembrokeshire County Council is putting up the cost of school dinners in its primary schools by 10p a meal.
The 5.8% rise is the first increase in two years and lower than the rise in the national food price index over the last two years.
And at £1.80p a meal the cost of primary school dinners in Pembrokeshire will still be less than in many counties in Wales.
Cafeteria prices in Pembrokeshire’s secondary schools will also rise by 5.8% from the start of the autumn term.
“Unfortunately this price increase is necessary because of the recent rise in food and fuel costs,” said Councillor Huw George, Cabinet member for Children and young People.
“The County Council provides high quality, nutritionally balanced meals for the best possible price and we are committed to continue doing so,” he said.
“The school meals service is a non-profit making service, subsidised by the County Council and despite the need to increase costs, we also remain committed to source quality local products and to using local supplies wherever possible.”
The price of school dinners in Pembrokeshire’s primary schools is currently £1.70p.
The last price increase was in September 2008.
