Pembrokeshire RNLI lifeguards help youngster after shallow water injury

Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards at Newgale beach assisted a 14-year-old from Surrey holidaying in Pembrokeshire on Wednesday 21 July, after he hit his head on a rock in shallow water.

The youngster had been brought to the lifeguard unit by his parents, just after 2pm, after he had hit the back of his head on a submerged rock in shallow water at Newgale North beach.

RNLI lifeguards Jack Pinson and Sean Ellison gently put the young casualty on a spinal board and kept him warm, while lifeguards Jessica Gates and Celyn Owen called for medical assistance.

An ambulance crew arrived and checked the boy over and decided to take him to Withybush Hospital, for further checks.

RNLI Pembrokeshire Lifeguard Supervisor Chris Rigby said: ‘We want holidaymakers to the area to have a great time and enjoy the fantastic beaches Pembrokeshire has to offer. The best way to ensure that is to swim at a lifeguarded beach in between the red and yellow flags. ‘Also, if you are new to an area ask the lifeguards if there are any potential hazards, such as submerged rocks, and make sure that children don’t bathe or play near them.’
