SUMMER holidays in Swansea come packed with recession busting fun thanks to the Splat and Skool’s Out summer holiday programmes.
Given the current economic climate Swansea Council’s Out of School Hours Learning team have been working hard this year getting grants and talking to businesses to provide many of the activities free or at a subsidised rate. This ensures the programmes are both more affordable and inclusive.
The Splat and Skool’s Out programmes are now in their seventh year and offer a wide range of summer holiday activities for young people between the ages of 5-13 and 11 to 19 year olds.
Over 27,000 attendances were recorded at the programmes in the summer of 2009 with a 96 per cent customer satisfaction rate.
Among the activities this summer 11 to 19 years of age can have a go at is a range of exciting adventure activities in local community venues and they are all free.
Adventure days include climbing, orienteering, swimming, kayaking, BMX,
lifesaving, skateboarding, mountain biking, basketball, street soccer, Tag Rugby and adventure games.
Qualified coaches will be on hand to provide all the necessary help and guidance.
Swansea Council and a host of local activity providers will also be putting on other free events from den building to the Space Hop reading challenge, from a range of sports to the Play on Wheels Playbus
Youngsters can get discounts from this summer include Gower Surf Development, Dynamic Rock and there is an amazing offer of FREE children’s ticket from the Odean.
Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education Cllr Mike Day said: “Summer school holidays should leave young people with fantastic memories and give them a chance to develop skills and experiences outside the classroom.
“We work really hard not only to provide a large range of activities which will give people the chance to try something new but also at the best price possible.
“The Skool’s Out summer programme and the Splat! Programme for younger children become more diverse every year with indoor and outdoor events to suit all tastes.”
