Environmental Scheme at Ynysbwllog

Visitors to the Neath Canal at Ynysbwllog near Resolven are reaping the benefits of a £220,000 environmental scheme.

Neath Port Talbot Council, together with Neath Canal Navigation, has now completed the project thanks to funding from the Welsh Assembly Government Strategic Regeneration Area, Valleys Regional Park ERDF and the Environment Agency Splash Fund.

Along with the works at Cyd Terrace, the environmental scheme will complement the flagship canal restoration project which saw a new 32 metre aqueduct built at Ynysbwllog.

The designer for the project was Mackley Davies from Monmouthshire and works were carried out by contractor T. Richard Jones (Betws) Ltd.

Improvements were carried out in the canal car park along with a new entrance and exit, planting, fencing and seating. The area now boasts a picnic area and surfaced paths for disabled access.

At Cyd Terrace, there is a lay by for parking, including disabled, with art panels created by school children from Clyne Primary School inserted in a new footpath. There are bridges, a boardwalk, a new bus shelter as well as new railings and seating.

Planting has also been carried out around the area.

Council Leader, Ali Thomas, said, “This is a unique part of the county borough and the improvements made will shape the future of tourism in years to come.”
