There were a number of new faces among residents and businesses supporting the annual Vale in Bloom competition.
Organised annually by the Vale of Glamorgan Council, the event comprises competitions for Barry, Penarth and rural villages, with the best of the bunch being judged against each other to determine overall Vale in Bloom winners.
Winner of the overall and Barry front garden awards for the second successive year was Norah Bawn, of Brookfield Avenue, who has enjoyed much success in the competition over a number of years.
A double success in consecutive years was also recorded by the Glenbrook Inn with a colourful and welcoming display in the Vale and Barry commercial categories and by Y Bont Faen (Cowbridge) in the Vale and villages schools categories.
In Barry, newcomer Wayne Pitman (Newgale Close) won the hanging basket category with an excellent display, and Peggy Hughes (Jenner Road) repeated last year’s success for the best entry from a disabled gardener.
In Penarth, there were once again a large number of high quality entries. Dennis and Ann Lush (Tudor Close) continued their winning ways in the front garden category and achieved the double with their attractive hanging basket display.
Lacey Beth Lloyd (St David’s Crescent) went one better than last year to win the children’s category and W Smith (Catherine Meazey Flats, Queens Road) improved on a third spot in 2008 to be crowned best disabled gardener.
The Marie Curie Hospice and Cogan nursery repeated their 2008 successes in the residential home/sheltered housing and schools categories, the latter sharing top spot this year with near neighbours Cogan primary.
In the villages competition, Lily Matthews, of Church Row, Pendoylan, produced the best front garden, with close neighbour Mr I Morrison securing third spot. New entrant Longmeadow Court (Cowbridge) finished top in the residential home and sheltered housing category.
