Gwynedd Council is extremely pleased with the success of Gwynedd pupils in the A Level examinations this year.
Dewi R Jones, Head of Education for Gwynedd Council said:
“It is a pleasure to report that A level results for Gwynedd schools are good once again this year and the young people are to be warmly congratulated for their commitment.
”The percentage achieving grades A-E across all subjects [97.7%] is slightly higher than the national average [97.1%] and the percentage of 23.2% that have achieved a grade A * or A is very close to the national average. Also encouraging is the fact that the A-E percentage is 100% in a significant number of subjects across the schools. This underlines the performance and success of all of our young people in the examinations
“I would like to take the opportunity to thank the teachers for their hard work and professionalism and the parents for their constant support.”
Whilst noting the need to interpret raw examination statistics with care, he referred to exceptional success in individual subjects.
“The performance in all subjects is commendable but the results in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Art, History, English and Welsh, are good. These subjects drew high numbers of pupils and achieved over 70% grades A-C. In addition, more than 70% of students gained A-C grades in Business, Geography, Drama, French and Physical Education,” added Dewi Jones.
In addition, the percentages achieving grades A-E [88.6%] and grade A [19.4%] in the Advanced Subsidiary examination were higher than the national averages [86.9% and 16.3%].
Dewi R Jones added that he is also proud of the success of learners in the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma qualification. He noted: “The Welsh Baccalaureate is an ideal preparation for higher education and employment and is a means for our students to access a rich and varied range of experiences and opportunities.”
Councillor Liz Saville Roberts, Portfolio Leader for Education Gwynedd Council said:
“We can again take pride in the success of the young people of Gwynedd. The pupils are to be congratulated for their dedication and perseverance and I would also like to offer my sincere gratitude to the teachers for their hard work during the year and for preparing students so thoroughly for the exams. ”

“These excellent results are testament to the hard work and dedication of our young people, teachers and parents – the success of our young people is key to Gwynedd’s future.
