Top performing youngsters from across Swansea have done themselves proud this year with thousands of them scoring top marks in their GCSE results.
The stats for the WJEC exam board were released on Tuesday and it shows that pupils in Swansea out-performed the Welsh average at the highest grades in a range of different subjects including English and Maths.
There was an increase in the number of passes at A* to C in Maths of almost 2% on the previous year and more than a fifth of those who sat the exam got an A* or A.
In 28 of the 59 different subjects on offer all entrants at Swansea schools achieved grades A* to G- a 100% pass rate.
The overall WJEC picture for Swansea was:
- A total pass rate of 98.5% (A* to G) for 2010, a slight dip on the 98.7% achieved the year before.
- 68% achieved the higher A* to C grades
- 19.7% achieved A* or A grades
Cllr Mike Day, Cabinet Member for Education at Swansea Council, said: “Once again pupils at Swansea schools have done themselves, their families and their schools proud.
“GCSE results are an important milestone in young people’s lives; they help pave the way for their future successes in their career choices.
“But for this week they should be just celebrating the fact that their hard work, together with the support of their teachers and families, has achieved so much.”
In the WJEC results for Maths the pass rate for A to C was 63.7%, 1.9% up on 2009 and significantly better than this year’s all-Wales average of 55.4%. More than a fifth of those who sat the exam (20.7%) achieved the highest A* or A grades.
In English Language 62.3% of entrants from Swansea emerged with A* to C, compared to 61.2% for Wales as a whole. And 13.5% of Swansea pupils who did English Language achieved the highest A* or A grades.
Overall A* to G pass rates in both subjects were above 99%.
