Community golf tournament

The Mayor of Newport Councillor Bill Langsford will launch the tournament, which has been organised by Newport City Council Community Sport Development and will follow the format of The Ryder Cup.

The morning tournament will take place between 10.30am and noon with the European team consisting of young people from Alway, Maes Glas, Pill and Somerton and the USA team featuring Gaer, Moorland, Ringland and Caerleon Golf Course guest team.

The afternoon tournament will take place between 1.30pm and 2.30pm and the European Team will be made up of young people from St Julians, Bettws and Shaftesbury, while the USA team will be made up of youngsters from Underwood, Maindee and Duffryn.

There will be a chipping competition, a string putting competition and a nine-hole competition on the academy course, which was funded by The Ryder Cup Legacy Fund and opened in May by golfer Ian Woosnam.

For those who are not part of the competition but want try out the golf course’s facilities there will be an open day on Saturday 25 September.
