Over 2,000 people enjoy the latest RCT Open Day

Over 2,000 people of all ages had a great day when Rhondda Cynon Taf Council threw open its doors for its most successful Open Day ever!

The Council is committed to ensuring residents from all walks of life are aware of the wide range of support, information and intervention services it offers.

As such, it has embarked on a programme of Open Days that enable visitors to find out what is on offer for them in an informal, entertaining and informative atmosphere.

As the latest Open Day at Rhondda Sports Centre, Ystrad, fell during the Summer Holidays, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council organised a family fun day that also allowed young people, their parents, grandparents and carers the chance to find out about the opportunities available to them.

The popular sports centre was full from the time the doors opened until the time they closed with 2155 people visiting to find out what is on offer for them.

As well as finding out about activities and services they can benefit from, residents were also given the chance to try their hand at kick boxing, jewellery-making, theatrical make-up, construction and much, much more.

A central arena at the event was a hive of activity as people enjoyed taster sessions of activities they can try out for real via the Council’s E3+, outdoor education, adult education and sports and leisure provision.

There were also sessions with Cardiff City Football Club, soft play activity for young children, DJ Skills with Martin Dibble, bouncy castles, sand art, street dancing and circus skills!

Surrounding the busy arena were information stands from a wide range of council services, including recycling and waste awareness, Services for Young People, adult education, maintaining independence and safety for the elderly or vulnerable, encouraging residents to get involved in consultation, meals on wheels and school meals services, careers at the Council, Foster Care and more.

Cllr Russell Roberts, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, said: “The sheer range of services that the Council offers can often be overwhelming.

“We are proud of the fact that we prioritise and invest carefully to ensure we can continue to deliver the schemes that we know matter the most to people, such as extensive after-school and holiday provision for young people, access to leisure and culture, support with education and training, assistance to maintain independence and so on.

“The Open Days are a good way for us to showcase the range of opportunities on offer to residents in a relaxed, informal way.

“We arrive in a community for the entire day and invite residents to come and meet with us at their own leisure.

“The event at Rhondda Sports Centre was the most popular by far and it was good to see families coming together to enjoy the many fun activities on offer. I hope they left the Open Day remembering that all the things they tried out, especially for young people, are on offer throughout the year from Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.”
