Librarians upgrade their IT skills

A library assistant based at Penygraig who completed a qualification to upgrade his ICT (Information and communication technologies) skills has been presented with a certificate for his hard work.

Matthew Thomas was one of 10 librarians from across South Wales who completed the ‘Applications of ICT in Libraries’ qualification – a higher education qualification at two levels. The successful students received their certificates in a presentation at Cynon Valley Museum and Gallery.

The course covered how to use ICT to support library activities such as enquiry work, reader development, providing open learning opportunities and delivering training. Coleg Llandrillo, Rhyl, delivers the qualification to library staff in South Wales – with enrolments increasing year on year.

Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Cllr Robert Bevan, said: “It is important that our staff have opportunities to update their skills. I’m pleased that a further eight members of staff from our Library Service will be following the course over the coming year.”

Funding for this further training has been obtained from CyMAL (Museums, Archives and Libraries, Wales).

Membership of all Rhondda Cynon Taf’s libraries is free and everyone living or working within the county borough is welcome to join. For more information on Rhondda Cynon Taf Library Service, log on to http://www.rhondda-cynon-taf.gov.uk/libraries
