Côr Y Fenni, the new community children’s choir, has been set up by a group of people with a passion for performing. It offers an unique opportunity for children from all over Abergavenny and its surroundings to make new friends, have fun and discover many new genres of music.
The choir’s main focus is on inclusivity and it is therefore open to every child aged 8-18, with no audition or experience necessary. It aims to inspire young people in the field of music and to encourage and support children with an interest in the performing arts.
The choir meets on a Monday at The Salvation Army Centre in Victoria Street, where they spend time singing all together, and also splitting up into specific groups. As well as the main choir, they have divided sister choir Côr Casnewydd in Newport into the following sub- groups. They aim to do this with Côr Y Fenni but this is dependent on demand:
Junior Choir – for children aged 8-11. We use fun and familiar material to encourage new talent.
Senior Performance Choir – for young performers aged 12-18. The senior choir combines more challenging material with some movement, making the first area Show Choir!
Chamber Choir – Girls aged 15-18 may be invited to also join the Chamber Choir, which uses advanced material and close-harmony singing to provide entertainment at corporate and private events.
Côr Y Fenni will be performing over the coming years in many concerts and gigs around the local area, with a particular emphasis on assisting with charity and community events and fundraisers. We take great pride in our ethos of inclusivity and endeavour to help out community and charity groups wherever and whenever we can.
Cor Y Fenni is the non-profit, non-selective, community children’s choir for Abergavenny and its surroundings. Open to everyone aged 8-18, regardless of gender, race, background, (dis)ability etc, young people will have the opportunity to try singing in a fun, friendly and informal environment, whilst also working towards helping out local and national charity and community groups. No experience is necessary to join and you don’t even have to be able to read music!
Cor Y Fenni will have its inaugural session at the Salvation Army Centre, Victoria St, Abergavenny, on Monday 1st November 2010. Rehearsals will then take place every Monday during term time at the same place and time.
