Volunteer-led all-day music festival returns to Womanby Street on Sunday 3rd October featuring an all-local line-up to raise money for Oxfam.
The Oxjam Cardiff Takeover will be back on Sunday 3rd October once again to form part of Oxfam’s UK-wide, month-long Oxjam Music Festival. The Oxjam Cardiff Takeover event returns for its second year, building on the success of the event last year that raised over £2000 for Oxfam. The volunteer-led , multi-venue event will once again be taking place in the heart of Cardiff City Centre on Womanby Street, providing 10 hours of festival vibes across 6 stages, all in the name of Oxfam. This year the event will feature exclusively local artists picked by local guest stage curators, who are all volunteering their time and efforts. If you love the local live music scene then this is an event not to be missed!
Special guest curators include: BBC Radio 1 Introducing in Wales’ Bethan Elfyn; South-Wales doom-merchants, Taint; local hip-hop heroes Associated Minds & Starving Artists; Cardiff’s independent monthly music magazine, The Miniature Music Press joins forces with eclectic Cardiff live-music promoter, Péchés Mignons; established Americana/country promoter, Gathered In Song pick their favourite acts alongside local folk legends, Whistling Biscuits.
Guest curator, BBC Radio 1 Introducing in Wales and BBC Radio Wales presenter Bethan Elfyn said, “I’m really looking forward to putting on this event with Oxjam. Its important to support the great work they do on the international field, wherever people are in desperate need. The music industry can be one of the most shallow places to work, and now and again we need to stop and take stock of ourselves, get together and raise a little money for others. The line up will be the best of some exciting new bands from Wales. Come have fun, and do some good too!”
The Oxjam Cardiff Takeover event runs from 4pm-2am on Sunday 3rd October 2010. Ticket-holders will be given a wristband which will enable them to access 6 stages across 4 venues (subject to capacity of individual venues), including Clwb Ifor Bach, Y Fuwch Goch, The City Arms and Dempseys. Over 30 local acts will be performing, from folk to hip-hop, to metal, funk and indie, and everything in-between. Tickets are available to buy online from WeGotTickets at £6 advance. Tickets will be available to buy on the day from Dempseys at £8, subject to availability. All profits will be donated to Oxfam.
As well as spending months planning and fundraising for the Oxjam Cardiff Takeover, the 9-strong Oxjam Cardiff team have also recruited and trained local volunteers to hold their own Oxjam events throughout October. The Oxjam Cardiff Takeover event on Sunday 3rd October will launch a month of various musical fundraising events throughout the region and together, the aim is to raise £8000 for Oxfam. This unique music festival is a great way for local people to get involved with the local live music scene whilst also raising money and awareness for Oxfam’s various campaigns.
“We want to provide a great experience for everyone who comes along to the Oxjam Cardiff Takeover event and the other various Oxjam events that will take place around South Wales throughout October. The energy and commitment of the Oxjam Cardiff team, our volunteers, guest stage curators and bands has been really inspiring, and we hope that we can translate our passion into a fantastic festival, which also highlights and supports the crucial work that Oxfam carry out. Oxjam’s been going since 2006 and it just keeps getting bigger and better. Oxjam 2010 is going to be amazing!” said volunteer Oxjam Cardiff Regional Manager, Gemma White.
