Governing Body of the Church in Wales – September 22-23, 2010

Helping people in developing countries and tackling climate change will be among the subjects looked at by church members throughout Wales at a key meeting next week.

Bishop Michael Doe, General Secretary of the international charity USPG: Anglicans in World Mission, will outline how the charity helps support vital church work in developing countries, including healthcare, education, leadership training and action for social justice. Many of its projects are supported by parishioners in Wales.

Meanwhile, Peter Davies, recently appointed as the first independent chairman of the Climate Change Commission for Wales, will talk about energy security and how churches can reduce their carbon footprint.

The two-day meeting of the Governing Body takes place on Wednesday and Thursday (Sept 22-23) at the University of Wales, Trinity St David, Lampeter (formerly the University of Wales Lampeter).

It will open with an address from the Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, as President of the Governing Body.

Other items on the agenda include:

  • Group discussions on the focus of the Church in Wales as it approaches its centenary in 2020;
  • Two Bills to enable reform of clergy terms of service and the Church’s court procedure;
  • An update from the Bench of Bishops on the Archiepiscopal See discussions.
  • A presentation on ethical investment.

The Governing Body has 143 members which include the six Diocesan Bishops and elected clergy (one third) and elected lay people (two-thirds). It meets twice a year, in April and September.

Reporters are welcome to attend. The meeting starts at 1.30pm on Wednesday, September 22.

A news release about the Archbishop’s address, embargoed until delivery at 2.30pm on Wednesday, will follow.
